What My Boyfriend Wore | Meet the Insta

This week we had the honour – nay, the privilege –  of interviewing Sergio Ines, the star of blog What My Boyfriend Wore about his instagram's (@whatmyboyfriendwore) stunning take on fashion. WMBW has won Sergio accolades such as GQ's Best Dressed and The Fashion Spot's Top 20 Men's Fashion Blogs.
He brings class to the casual, and fun to the formal. In this interview, Sergio tells us about what it like to live in Cape Town, how to get dressed in the morning, and what his hopes are for the future of WMBW. Enjoy!

How did it feel to be one of the top GQ best dressed men?

Coming second in our local GQ's Best Dressed was definitely a goal for me and I was very honoured to have achieved it, having been in the 'public eye' for a little under a year. Being nominated as one of the top 10 best dressed men on Instagram by British GQ was a complete surprise and an amazing feeling to be recognized on a global scale.

Wow, I really am the worst fashion blogger. I'm starting to think I may be an anti-fashion blogger. I don't really have a bunch of favourite designers, i'm very partial to Paul Smith as I think we share similar views on fashion. Keep it classic and give it a contemporary twist.

What’s your favorite watch brand?

I must be honest, I don't really have "favourites" of anything – I try and not be blinded by brands and rather judge each piece on its individual style or design.

How do you like living in Cape Town?

How do I like living on one of the most beautiful cities in the world? Uh, yeah, A LOT!!! Cape Town is the perfect mix of nature and city and it truly is a spectacular place to visit, never mind live in. I often look around and count myself incredibly lucky to call this place home.

Hahahaha. I've never really thought about it, but I guess I am. I think I'm maybe just the one who puts in the most effort.

Who did you get your fashion sense from?

I think ultimately I got my fashion sense from my dad, he was always very proud in what he wore and would regale in stories of winning best dressed competition at local social events. I enjoyed fashion from an incredibly early age, I always knew exactly what I wanted to buy and exactly what I wanted to wear.

How many photos do you take before you’re like, “Yes, this one!”?

I don't know if there is a magic number, but it's pretty high. You never quite know when you've got the shot, so you always overshoot. Sometimes it's the first photo and sometimes it's the last, on average I would say about 300 shots.

Do you edit all your photos?

I do all my own retouching yes, but I never change anything. Sometimes there's an orange traffic cone or a bright green bin in the background that I remove, or a weird reflection in my sunglasses, but generally, what you see is what we shot.

What’s one quick fashion tip for a guy going out tonight?

My ultimate fashion tip is wearing clothing that fits you properly. Guys tend to buy everything one size too big and it makes them look uncomfortable. When you feel uncomfortable, you look uncomfortable.

With a man so stylish, what’s your most stylish pick-up line?

I've never been one for pick-up lines, I'm incredibly shy and generally hope a smile does the trick. In saying that, I've had no need for either since meeting my perfect match.

Do the local clothing stores know you when you walk in?

Some of the shop assistances recognize me when I walk into a store, and it still completely freaks me out. I'm always humbled by it. I never ever imagined my life this way.

Who is your biggest fan?

The competition for my biggest fan would be a pretty stiff one between my mom and my girlfriend, I think in their eyes I've never appeared badly dressed.

What’s the biggest “no” when picking your outfit?

You can wear anything with confidence. There are no wrong choices, so I guess the biggest "no" would be a lack of confidence.

What’s your favorite outfit to wear?

I think I'm my happiest in full black tie. There is something about stepping into a tuxedo that just changes everything.

Do your friends ask you for fashion advice all the time?

Guys are weird, it seems like they don't want to admit they're into fashion. The questions generally roll in once they've had a few drinks and their defenses are down, that's when they start telling me about this great pair of shoes they found or asking me where they can find a nice shirt.

Do you have an insta?

I have 2 actually, I use @whatmyboyfriendwore for all my fashion stuff and @sergio_ines for day to day stuff like real life.

What’s the most manly drink to order at a bar?

This is a tricky one, and my answer depends on the season. In winter I'm gonna say an Old Fashioned is definitely the drink to go for, while in summer I'm more partial to a Negroni. Both are classic cocktails that have stood the test of time and are simply made with liquor on liquor.

This may surprise you, but I pay very little attention to fashion and trends, so it's impossible to know where it may end up. I am concerned though with the amount of athletic inspired fashion trends that keep popping up, it takes men further away from making an effort to dress up.

Any crazy or out-there style of fashion you’d like to see trending in the near future?

Yes, Suits. Yeah, it may not seem crazy, but it is. Men wear suits less and less these days. I would love to go back to the 50's when you rarely left the house without a suit and a hat.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I'm hoping that in 5 years we'll be running 'What My Husband Wore' and I'll be a daddy blogger dispensing fashion and lifestyle advice for other dads :)
